What is a Node?

Before we begin:

  • A Node in PlusCMS is simply a piece of content (e.g. a page, news item, event, or resource).

  • Every item you create using a content type is a node.

What is a Node Queue?

A Node Queue is a way to create a manually controlled list of content.

It allows you to:

  • Choose exactly which content appears

  • Control the order it is shown

  • Limit how many items are displayed

πŸ‘‰ This is useful when you want full editorial control, rather than relying on automatic listings.

When should I use a Node Queue?

You should create a Node Queue when:

  • You want to curate specific content

  • You are building a campaign or landing page

  • You need content displayed in a specific order

  • You don’t want content to update automatically

Example:
A homepage section showing 6 selected resources in a specific order

Before You Start (Permissions)

To create and manage Node Queues, your user role must have the following permissions:

  • Manipulate Nodequeue
    β†’ Add/remove content from a queue

  • Administer Nodequeue
β†’ Create and manage queues (non-reserved only)

  • Create, update and delete nodequeues (non-reserved)

πŸ‘‰ If you cannot see or use Node Queues, contact your administrator.

Where to Find Node Queues

Go to:

Admin β†’ Structure β†’ Nodequeue

Default Node Queues (Already Set Up)

Your site may already include these:

  • Featured events

  • Featured news

  • Featured opportunities

  • Featured past events

  • Featured resources

These are automatically populated when content is marked as Featured.

πŸ‘‰ You typically don’t need to create new queues if these already meet your needs.

Creating a New Node Queue

Step 1: Create the Queue

  1. Go to:
    Admin β†’ Structure β†’ Nodequeue

  2. Click Add nodequeue

  3. Fill in:

    • Title
β†’ Use a clear name (e.g. Homepage Campaign Cards)

    • Queue size

      • Enter a number to limit items (e.g. 6)

      • Leave as 0 for unlimited

  4. Click Save

Step 2: Important Settings (Keep It Simple)

You’ll see additional options.

For most cases:

  • βœ… Enforce Uniqueness β†’ keep this checked
    (prevents duplicate content)

  • Leave all other settings as default

Click Save

Step 3: Choose Content Types

Select which content types can be added, for example:

  • News

  • Events

  • Resources

  • Pages

πŸ‘‰ Only selected types will be available later.

Click Save

Adding Content to Your Queue

Step 4: Add and Order Content

  1. Click:
Manage queue – [Your Queue Name]

  2. Add content:

    • Search and select pages to include

  3. Reorder items:

    • Drag and drop into your preferred order

  4. Click Save

πŸ‘‰ The order here = the order shown on your website

Using a Node Queue on a Page

Node Queues are typically used with Collection Cards.

Step 5: Display Your Queue

When adding a Collection Cards section:

  1. Select Use Node Queue

  2. Choose your queue

  3. Configure layout:

    • Cards per row (3 or 4)

    • Number of rows

    • Optional title

    • Optional β€œView All” link

πŸ‘‰ Important:

  • Collection Cards = controls layout

  • Node Queue = controls content + order

Setting a Limit (Optional)

If you set a queue size (e.g. 6 items):

  • Adding a 7th item will automatically remove one

  • By default, the oldest item is removed

πŸ‘‰ This helps keep content fresh without manual cleanup

Editing a Node Queue Later

To update your content:

  1. Go to:
    Structure β†’ Nodequeue

  2. Click Manage queue

  3. Add, remove, or reorder items

  4. Click Save

πŸ‘‰ Changes update everywhere the queue is used

How Default Queues Work (Important)

For built-in queues (e.g. Featured content):

  • Content is added automatically

  • When you mark content as Featured, it is:

    • Added to the queue

    • Placed at the top

πŸ‘‰ These queues are not manually curated in the same way

Key Things to Remember

  • Node Queues give you full control

  • You decide what content appears

  • Drag and drop controls order

  • Queue size can limit items automatically

  • Works best with Collection Cards

  • Default queues may already meet your needs
